Stump removal

Getting a stump and its root mass out of the ground.

Removal and grinding are not the same thing, and the difference matters more than most people expect.

Grinding chews the visible stump down below the surface and leaves the root system in the ground. Excavating pulls the stump and root mass out, which leaves a substantial hole to backfill. If you are planting, paving, building or grading over that spot, the choice changes what you can do afterwards.

What Drives the Job

  • Size and species, which together decide how much root mass is underground
  • How many stumps, and how far apart
  • Access for the machine, which is often the deciding factor for a stump in a rear yard
  • Proximity to utilities, irrigation, septic components, structures and hardscape
  • How much fill the hole needs and how finished the surface has to be
